Gay footballer speaks out
An anonymous Bundesliga player has revealed that he is gay and claims that several other players in the division are too.
The unnamed footballer, who has chosen to withhold his identity, made the admission while talking to Fluter.
He has chosen to remain anonymous as he feels that homosexuals will never fit with the heterosexual nature of football, while he also believes it would put his safety at risk.
"The price I pay for living my dream as a Bundesliga player is high. I have to be an actor everyday and go into self-denial," he said. "Unlike other celebrities, football players have to follow the footballer stereotype. They have to love sports, fight aggressively and be a role-model at the same time. And gays don't follow that formula. I would not be safe anymore if my sexuality was made public."
The unidentified man says there are other gay Bundesliga players but even if they wanted to meet up socially they could never do so as the risk would be far too great.
"I know of other Bundesliga players who are gay as well," he said. "We don't meet, it would just be too noticeable. It is a difficult parallel universe which continues inside the team. We don't talk about it much, nevertheless everyone knows about it. They sometimes ask me about my partner. I know all their stories from the papers but they have to ask me to find out."
Despite several players in the league being gay, the unnamed man does not believe a mass outing would make much difference in changing people's prejudices.
"It might be easier to get over if several players outed themselves at once but I don't have a lot of hope this would help," he added. "We'd still be a minority to harp on about."
