Beckenbauer: Germany are due a trophy

Franz Beckenbauer believes Spain's domination of world football will come to an end sooner rather than later, and Germany could replace them at the top of the game.

• Khedira: We must keep focus Speaking to Bild on his 67th birthday, Beckenbauer explained it will not get any easier for the Germans, who are still trying to earn their first major title since Euro 1996.

"It's time we won something else, as our last tournament victory was in 1996. Sadly, it won't be easy in Brazil 2014," Beckenbauer said. "Spain have dominated football since the 2006 World Cup, but their dominance will end at some point."

Beckenbauer believes Germany's future will be built on players from Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, who continue to dominate the Bundesliga.

"Marco Reus, Mario Gotze, Thomas Muller is a perfect combination in midfield. Bayern have now taken on a style of play very similar to Dortmund, as they both counter-attack very well. Those foundations from Dortmund and Bayern will dominate the national team - very much like Gladbach and Bayern way back in the '70s."

Germany face Austria on Beckenbauer's birthday and he does not expect it to be a staightforward victory for Joachim Low's men.

"It is going to be tougher for Germany than the years before," he said. "Coach Marcel Koller has a strong team - his side includes a lot of Bundesliga players."
