Hennessey hopeful of comeback

Wayne Hennessey is hoping for the all-clear to step up his bid to make a comeback from a serious knee injury early in the New Year.

• Doyle never wanted to leave

Hennessey, 25, will this week visit the surgeon who operated on his ruptured cruciate ligament in April. The Wales international has been working on training drills for several weeks and now wants the go-ahead to return to full training and press for a return to Stale Solbakken's side.

"Hopefully that will be good news and maybe my last visit if he gives me the all clear," Hennessey said on the club's official website. "If all is well, maybe move into contact work and push on from there. It feels good at the moment but I'm not getting carried away. With a cruciate injury you have to find that balance between not doing too much and not doing too little."

Hennessey, who was attracting interest from Everton, Manchester City and Chelsea last season, has worked overtime to regain full fitness since suffering the injury against Sunderland.

"I have been out doing some work outside for a few weeks now and that certainly has helped me to get out with the goalkeepers again. I can certainly see the light at the end of the tunnel because I am doing little bits here and there with kicking and so on and saving shots again."

He has received huge support from former Wolves 'keeper Matt Murray and he has also sought advice from England internationals.

"I've spoken to other people who have had this injury before, like Ben Foster and Michael Owen, who had a bad one in the World Cup. A lot of it is about mental strength. You know it is a bad injury and have just got to work at it and get it strong.

"You have to get your head down and work hard because if you don't then it's all the more difficult to come back. It's a good target to reach and I've got to try and reach it."
