Trapattoni warns McClean

Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni has warned James McClean over his foul-mouthed Twitter rant, revealing that if he had been playing for a bigger country then he would have faced the axe.

Sunderland winger McClean, 23, expressed his frustration at not making it off the bench in Ireland's 2-1 win over Kazakhstan on Friday via the social networking site, calling the decision a "f****n* joke".

McClean was quick to delete the tweet before apologising to Trapattoni and the rest of the Ireland squad for the incident.

Trapattoni has allowed the player to stay in the squad for Tuesday's friendly with Oman, but he believes other national managers may not have been so kind.

"Another manager, English or German, would have said 'Take your bag and go home', but I might need him in the game to score a goal," Trapattoni said. "He was mortified (when he was pulled up in front of the squad). If he could have, he would have eaten his words. He was very apologetic.

"I said to everyone: 'This is not about respect for the manager - this is about respect for everyone'. I said: 'The players are your colleagues'. If I don't play him, I can play others. There was Stephen Kelly and Kevin Doyle on the bench. They have many caps.

"The matter is closed now. With the young we need to have patience. Sometimes they say things they regret."

McClean has endured a frustrating international career since making his debut in February, having only gone on to make three more appearances due to Trapattoni's faith in his senior players.
