McCabe left 'drained' by Rangers turmoil

Former Rangers player Rhys McCabe has said the club's summer of turmoil left him feeling drained as uncertainty swirled around Ibrox.

McCabe, 20, told the Daily Record the situation had been "mentally draining" and said things at Ibrox were "a lot more severe than people thought".

He was one of numerous players who declined to transfer their contract to Charles Green's newco following the liquidation of the old Rangers and moved to Championship club Sheffield Wednesday.

Scottish Football League clubs voted for the newco to begin its footballing life in Scottish Division Three and midfielder McCabe - who had been at Ibrox since the age of nine - said: "What happened to the club was really disappointing."

The Scotland Under-21 international said: "What happened at Rangers was mentally draining. It was hard to leave because I'm a Rangers fan.

"Things at Rangers were a lot more severe than people thought. Towards the last week of the close season, my mind was pickled. I was going out for runs at night to clear my head.

"It had a big effect on me, and I'm just glad it's all over and I'm back playing football. I'm getting my focus back and can get on with life again."

McCabe will be representing his country as they chase a UEFA Under-21 Championship play-off spot against Austria on Monday.

He said: "We're capable of winning. We've got a quality squad and it would be massive to get through to the play-offs and make the finals."
