Roxburgh to leave UEFA technical post

Andy Roxburgh is to step down as UEFA's technical director after almost two decades.

Roxburgh, 69, took up the post in 1994 and will leave at the end of this month. UEFA said it would not appoint a direct replacement but would maintain the department he has led.

The former Scotland manager, who took the national team to the 1990 World Cup and the European Championship two years later, said he would present the Euro 2012 technical analysis to a conference of national team coaches later this month - his last big contribution.

"It's just a natural process. My contract comes to an end. I don't intend to hang up my coaching boots," he said. "We will try to find some life in the old boots."

Roxburgh added that both Sir Alex Ferguson and Republic of Ireland head coach Giovanni Trapattoni were inspirations to him, with both continuing their management careers into their seventies.
