Wenger hits out over chanting

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes some of the abuse that is thrown in his direction by opposing fans during his time as Gunner chief has been "too disrespectful".

After Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood labelled supporters who resort to personal attacks against Wenger as 'disgusting', the Arsenal boss admits some of the comments he has been forced to accept down the years have often left him questioning those intent on taunting him.

Wenger has run a gauntlet of hate when he takes his place on the touchline at venues such as Tottenham's White Hart Lane and Stoke's Britannia Stadium down the years, with the Frenchman insisting he does not see the funny side of abuse that is dismissed as banter from the terraces.

"I do not especially enjoy the banter with the supporters of the opposing teams, but I never fear it," Wenger said. "When you go to the game as a manager, you focus on the game and not what the fans might say to you.

"Believe me, if I had taken too much notice of the comments I have received from some fans over the last 15 years, I would have been tempted to give up and walk away from English football a long time ago.

"After a time, you become immune to anything the opposing fans may chant at you. Everyone has a responsibility to behave in a certain way and the abuse is too disrespectful at times, but you cannot be influenced by it."
