Cristiano Ronaldo clarifies 'sad' talk

Cristiano Ronaldo took to his official Twitter account Tuesday night in an attempt to clarify his recent comments on his "sadness" at Real Madrid for the benefit of the team's fans.

"That I am feeling sad and have expressed this sadness has created a huge stir," he began in a 91-word statement linked from his tweet.

"I am accused of wanting more money, but one day it will be shown that this is not the case. At this point, I just want to guarantee to the Real Madrid fans that my motivation, dedication, commitment and desire to win all competitions will not be affected," he continued.

"I have too much respect for myself and for Real Madrid to ever give less to the club than all I am capable of.

"Abrazos (hugs) to all madridistas."

Ronaldo's statement broke the silence of the 27-year-old star after his comments on Sunday that he refused to revel in his scoring feats during Real Madrid's first victory after three rounds of the Spanish season because he was "sad" for "professional" reasons.

Earlier Tuesday, Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa promised to support his teammate, echoing the thoughts of fellow Real Madrid player Kaka, who expressed his support for Ronaldo on Monday.

Quoted in Marca, Arbeloa told reporters at the Spanish national team's base in Las Rozas: "He just needs more affection from everybody, I don't know, that's all we can give him.

"Everybody has the right to be sad, he's a person just like anyone else," Arbeloa said. "He doesn't share the problems of most Spanish people but it's perfectly reasonable that he can be sad."

Ronaldo's agent, Jorge Mendes, said in a statement posted on his agency's website Monday that he knows the reason for Ronaldo's discontent but that he will leave it to his star client to disclose that information.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo dismissed speculation that Ronaldo could be on his way to the big-spending Ligue 1 club.

"Ronaldo is a Real Madrid player. We don't talk about others teams' players -- that's respect," he told radio station RMC.

"(Zlatan) Ibrahimovic is the best striker in the world. So why hire Ronaldo? Zlatan is unique," he continued. "When we talk about the best players, there is Ronaldo and (Lionel) Messi -- but they are not strikers. The best striker, that's Zlatan."
