Mourinho unhappy with players

Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho said he was unhappy with his players' attitude despite their 3-0 La Liga win over Granada at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday evening.

• Ronaldo unhappy with Madrid

Madrid eased to victory with two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and a late clincher from substitute Gonzalo Higuain after Granada had been reduced to ten men with Borja Gomez sent off.

The ex-Chelsea boss, who spoke before Ronaldo made public his current "sadness", said it was not okay to play well against Barcelona - whom Madrid beat 2-1 on Thursday to claim the Spanish Supercopa - and then drop their level against lesser opponents.

"Against Barcelona we played at our limit and in La Liga games we did not," he said. "For me it is difficult to explain. There are things I need to discover. I cannot say we did not want to win the game, or that a particular player had a bad attitude, but I want more. I am not happy. We must have more intensity and work more."

Mourinho, who was even more unhappy last weekend after his team lost 0-1 at Getafe, said there was a lot to dislike in the way his team had performed.

"I did not like our performance," Mourinho said. "Little ambition, rhythm and intensity. I did not like it. We had little time to work during the week, we were slow. We got the points but that is not enough. We need to play much more."

The Madrid coach did, however, praise the display of Luka Modric, who made his first start for Madrid since his move from Tottenham, taking Mesut Ozil's usual attacking midfield role.

"I am thinking of other positions, but at the moment he is not fully fit," Mourinho said. "Playing there (further forward) he has more time to recover. This was a good game for him. It was difficult for him to play better when his team was not playing well."

Michael Essien - snapped up on loan just before Friday's summer transfer window slammed shut - watched the game from the stands, while Kaka, who remained at the club despite Mourinho saying he could leave, was an unused substitute.

Mourinho said the summer's business, which saw Esteban Granero and Lass Diarra leave Madrid for QPR and Anzhi Makhachkala respectively, had been handled cleverly by Madrid, especially considering the mood of austerity around Spain.

"This transfer window has been an example for today's society," he said. "We spent less than we took in. We did two fantastic operations with Granero and Lass, who were coming to the end of their contracts. They turned down the chance to renew and could have gone for free. Madrid has had the foresight to do the maths and take in €20 million."
