Clint Dempsey signs with Tottenham

Clint Dempsey signed a three-year deal with Tottenham Hotspur on Friday, just hours before the end of the transfer window.

Sky Sports reported the clubs had agreed on a transfer fee of 6 million pounds ($9.5 million).

The American international -- who made 224 appearances for Fulham, scoring 60 goals -- had been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool. Earlier Friday, Fulham denied reports that the club rejected a bid from Liverpool, and Dempsey turned down a move to Aston Villa.

"I'm very excited and looking forward to the challenge," Dempsey told Tottenham's official website. "To play under this head coach and play for this club is a dream come true. I want to make the most of it and work as hard as I can to get onto the field and do well. There are a lot of great players here;, I'm looking forward to training and playing with them and trying to fight for a sot in the team."

Tottenham also acquired goalkeeper Hugo Lloris from Lyon on a four-year deal for 10 million euros ($12.6 million), a fee which could rise to 15 million euros ($18.9 million).

Liverpool was reported to have tabled its Dempsey offer after selling Charlie Adam to Stoke City, only to see it turned down by the Londoners.

Villa had a bid, thought to be around 7 million pounds ($11 million), for the forward accepted, but the 29-year-old Dempsey turned it down. Insiders at both Fulham and Liverpool, however, have told ESPN that no Liverpool offer had been lodged.

"Clint was a very influential player for Fulham over a number of seasons and the club thanks him for his contribution and wishes him well for the future," a statement on the Fulham website read.

Liverpool has spent much of the summer chasing Dempsey, sparking an angry reaction from Fulham manager Martin Jol after the player went on strike on the eve of the new season.

"A lot was said and written ahead of me leaving Fulham," Dempsey told Spurs' website. "It wasn't how it was portrayed, but that's in the past now and we move on. I want to thank the fans for everything, some of the best memories I've had in football and thank the chairman for giving me the opportunity to come from the MLS and compete over here. All I can say is thank you and now I'm looking forward to the next challenge."

Lloris, who is the France captain and has 38 international caps to his name, joined Lyon in 2008 from Nice and made 144 league appearances.

"I am here because I believe in Tottenham," the goalkeeper told Spurs TV Online. "I think everything is OK for the future of Tottenham. They have great team, great players, and a great coach so everything is all right, I think, to win a place in the Champions League next year. Now we have to prove that on the pitch and I am ready to give it my all for the club and for the fans."

Tottenham hoped to lure Porto playmaker Joao Moutinho to White Hart Lane but it appears talks fell through after the deadline passed with no word of a deal. Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas said Thursday that it would be "impossible" to sign the 25-year-old, who has a 40 million euro ($50.2 million) release clause in his contract.

The Spurs did lose midfielder Rafael van der Vaart to Hamburg and forward Giovani dos Santos to Real Mallorca on Friday.

The 23-year-old Mexico international dos Santos has put pen to paper on a four-year deal with the La Liga club.

Dos Santos has struggled to settle during a four-year spell at White Hart Lane after moving there from Barcelona, and has been loaned out to Ipswich, Galatasaray and Racing Santander in recent seasons.

Dempsey wasn't the only American on the move Friday, as Maurice Edu completed an expected move to Stoke City and Carlos Bocanegra joined Racing Santander on a season-long loan. Both Edu and Bocanegra left Glasgow Rangers following the club's bankruptcy and relegation.

U.S. defender Oguchi Onyewu was loaned from Sporting Lisbon to Malaga, and forward Joe Gyau was sent from Hoffenheim to St. Pauli on a loan. Malaga is in this season's Champions League.

Rejected Aston Villa, meanwhile, settled for signing Belgium international striker Christian Benteke from Genk, as well as Crewe midfielder Ashley Westwood for an undisclosed fee on a four-year contract.
