QPR admit defeat in Dawson pursuit

QPR are understood to have accepted that they will not be able to sign Michael Dawson from Tottenham Hotspur on deadline day.

Just last week, Mark Hughes stated that he hoped the wage negotiations - which had proved a stumbling block - could be resolved, but that has not been the case.

Furthermore, despite having accepted a bid from QPR, Spurs are now understood to have reservations about the sale due to the four-month injury to Younes Kaboul.

Andre Villas-Boas had been eager to move on Dawson - to the point of almost creating a man-management issue with a popular member of the Spurs squad - but now may have to rely on him.

QPR, meanwhile, may have to use Stephane Mbia in central defence more than midfield, with the Cameroon midfielder to become Hughes' tenth summer signing.

Hughes said: "A lot of discussion has taken place in terms of (his) contract and expectations from both sides so that's pretty much been concluded.

"So once we get through the medical hopefully we will be able to conclude the deal very quickly. He is another player that can play in a couple of positions. I like that flexibility in players. He is a good age, and we have paid a good price for him."
