Andy Carroll to play for West Ham

Liverpool and England striker Andy Carroll has joined West Ham on a season-long loan, the Merseyside club confirmed Thursday.

Carroll's position at Anfield has been the subject of considerable speculation since new manager Brendan Rodgers took charge earlier in the summer.

The 23-year-old also had been linked with a return to former club Newcastle but the Hammers now have acquired his services for the 2012-13 season.

"It's great to be here at West Ham and all signed up -- I just can't wait to get started now," he told West Ham's official website.

Carroll joined the Reds in a club record 35 million pounds ($55.2 million) deadline-day deal in January 2011 but has failed to establish himself at Merseyside. Reports that he was poised to move to Upton Park grew Thursday, and he was conspicuous by his absence as Liverpool faced Hearts in a Europa League qualifier on Thursday night.

Carroll scored nine goals for the Reds in all competitions last season but did not command a regular starting place.

"I believe it has been difficult for him in his period here," said Rodgers. "He hasn't played anywhere near as regularly as he wanted to and he wanted this to be a season where he was going to be playing regularly. ...

"He wants to play and unfortunately for us we are not really in the position to have a 35-million-pound player not playing regularly. The club made a monumental investment in Andy but it is no good him being on the bench. At this moment in time there are others ahead of him. He has got the chance to go and play and demonstrate his qualities and hopefully it allows us to move on and we will assess it over the course of the season."

Caroll began to impress toward the end of the campaign and at Euro 2012 with England but he still did not appear to feature in Rodgers' plans.

"I'm hoping to add a lot of goals and create a few chances. I know (West Ham manager) Sam (Allardyce) from Newcastle and he was a massive reason for me coming. When I worked with him at Newcastle it was great, so it was a no-brainer really."

Allardyce added: "I think for all parties this is a great signing. Andy is an all-round footballer, but because he is 6 foot 3 and one of his strengths is his aerial power, everybody dismisses the ability he possesses on the floor.

"Hopefully, he can score goals for us and we will be in a very good position at the end of the year in the Barclays Premier League."

Also Thursday, Liverpool signed 18-year-old German striker Samed Yesil from Bayer Leverkusen.

The highly-rated youngster, who had previously been linked with Arsenal, boasts an impressive strike rate, having scored 22 goals in 26 appearances for his country at under-16, under-17 and under-18 level.

The club says he has been signed initially to bolster the youth ranks.
