Sessegnon signs new deal

Sunderland forward Stephane Sessegnon has signed a new long-term contract at the Stadium of Light after a summer of speculation about his future.

Sessegnon, 28, joined the Black Cats from Paris Saint Germain in January 2011 for a fee of £6 million, having also previously spent time at Le Mans.

He was voted the club's player of the year last season and has performed well since moving to the Premier League scoring 11 goals in 58 appearances.

His fine form had seen him linked with both Tottenham and Arsenal over the summer, with Martin O'Neill unable to rule out the Benin international leaving Wearside.

Speaking earlier this month O'Neil said: "If I was to say 'You cannot touch him' then I might have to come back here two days later and say 'sorry'. That would be all bravado speak."

Speculation linking Sessegnon away from the club had first surfaced last season amid reports the player's family were unable to settle on Wearside.

With the issue seemingly resolved, O'Neill is hoping that it doesn't resurface.

"If some families can't settle in areas or countries then you have to take it into consideration.

"That was an issue and I just hope that issue disappears again this year - I don't want that to rear its head again."

Sessegnon has now signed a deal that will keep him under contract at the club until 2015, the deal is also subject to the player being granted an extension to his work permit.
