Dimitar Berbatov has Fulham physical

Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov is undergoing a physical at Fulham, the club's manager Martin Jol confirmed Thursday.

The 31-year-old was widely expected to leave Old Trafford following the signing of Robin van Persie and now appears to close to a reunion with Jol, who was his manager at Tottenham.

If the deal, believed to be worth as much as 5 million pounds ($7.9 million), is completed without any issues, Jol hopes to include the Bulgarian in his squad for Saturday's trip to West Ham.

"As I said last week we are a healthy club, we didn't just need the (Moussa) Dembele money to spend before. Of course you have to pay good players good money but I think we have made steps over the last few years and there have been many clubs interested in Dimitar."

Fiorentina had reportedly agreed to acquire Berbatov, but the Serie A club issued a statement Wednesday saying the deal had all but dissolved and pointing fingers at Juventus. Juve confirmed Wednesday that its own transfer bid for Berbatov also had failed.

"Nothing is what it seems, I'm not sure about Juventus. Fiorentina will tell you the story he could go to Juventus but they went for one or two other players -- but he was on my list the whole time and he knew that," Jol said.

"I tried to do something months ago and it didn't come off and I came back so for him it was a right moment to make a decision and he made the decision for (a move to) us."

Berbatov has scored 48 league goals at United, helping it to two Premier League titles, but his Old Trafford future has been in doubt since he was left out of the squad for the 2010-11 Champions League final against Barcelona at Wembley.

Despite slipping down the pecking order last year he reminded any potential suitors of his goal-scoring class with a hat trick against Wigan last December, before adding two more in the unexpected home defeat to Blackburn five days later.

Last month he admitted he was resigned to leaving the club this summer, saying it would be "better for everyone" if he exited Old Trafford.
