Barca to appeal Tito Vilanova's ban

Barcelona confirmed they will appeal for a second time after coach Tito Vilanova was handed a two-match ban Wednesday for his red card in Sunday's La Liga victory over Osasuna.

Vilanova, taking control of only his third competitive match since replacing Pep Guardiola, was sent to the stands in the 70th minute of the match for what the referee's report claimed was "angrily protesting a play during the match after being warned by the assistant referee."

Barca appealed against the ruling after Vilanova claimed he was only calling for a foul, but the Spanish football federation (RFEF) Wednesday gave him a two-match ban.

Barca, who face Real Madrid in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup at the Bernabeu on Wednesday (4:30 p.m. ET, ESPN Deportes, ESPN3), subsequently announced they will lodge another appeal against the decision.

Vilanova's suspension is for Barcelona's next two La Liga matches against Valencia and Getafe. He will coach his team in Wednesday's Super Cup match against Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao has been given a four-match suspension by the RFEF for comments he made to the referee during his side's 2-1 defeat at Getafe when the unused substitute was ejected from the bench late in the match.

Information from the Press Association was used in this report.
