Pardew: No Toon return for Carroll

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has admitted defeat in his attempts to bring Andy Carroll back to the club from Liverpool.

Carroll, 23, moved to Merseyside from Newcastle in a record £35 million deal in January 2011, but has since scored only 11 goals in 58 games.

He was heavily linked with an exit following the arrival of new Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers in the summer, with West Ham and Newcastle interested in moves that would have involved a loan spell prior to a permanent deal.

Sources close to Carroll suggested he would only be willing to leave Anfield if it meant a return to the Magpies but, asked whether that remained a possibility, Pardew said: "Not as far as I'm aware, no."

The transfer window has proved to be a frustrating time for Pardew, with the club so far failing to secure deals to sign several of their reported targets.

The manager said: "We are just watching the market and seeing if anything pops its head up that's appealing to us. But at the moment, the targets we have are all very much secure at their clubs."
