Villas-Boas: Vertonghen Spurs' new King

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has backed summer signing Jan Vertonghen to fill the void left by former captain Ledley King following his retirement from the game.

Spurs supporters handed King a rapturous ovation as he made an appearance at White Hart Lane in Saturday's 1-1 draw against West Brom, with Villas-Boas piling the pressure on Vertonghen by claiming he will emerge as the new rock of the Tottenham defence.

"We lost an extremely good player in King, but we still have experienced players and others with a bright to take into the future and in Vertonghen, we have a guy who can emerge as a big talent here," Villas-Boas said.

"Jan is very comfortable with the ball and as long as his ambition is displayed within reason and the team is balanced, you have to allow players to express themselves. This is why I say he is capable of making a big impact."

Villas-Boas insists he will not panic after collecting just one point from his first two games at Tottenham, as he points out that his side are already improving on the tally they collected at this stage last season.

"Spurs lost their first two matches a year ago, so we already have one more point," said Villas-Boas. "Clearly we need to get the first win quickly, but I'm convinced it will come in our next game if they players continue to work as hard as they have since my arrival."
