Villa cool Defoe and Jones talk

Paul Lambert has ended Aston Villa's interest in signing either Jermain Defoe or Kenwyne Jones.

• Live Transfer Blog: On the Move

The Villa manager has admitted he is in the market to bring in more new signings to increase his attacking options ahead of the closure of the transfer window.

But he has made it clear that Villa will not be making any approaches to Spurs or Stoke City for either of the strikers.

"They are two top, top players, those lads. But that's not going to happen here," he said. "I have seen the rumours linking us with some players, but a lot of them aren't going to happen."

Lambert only has one proven goalscorer in Darren Bent, as Gabriel Agbonlahor continues his rehabilitation from a knee injury sustained in pre-season.

He will continue to scour the market for potential new arrivals and expects some business to be done ahead of next Friday's deadline.

But any signing will have to fall in line with the new financial policies in place at the club as owner Randy Lerner looks to further drive down the wage bill.

"I have never stopped looking. Someone might come in. We'll have to wait and see. You can never be quite sure until someone walks through the door and they are actually here," Lambert said.

"It's difficult because of the prices and that's a hard thing. I think it's well documented the type of players I'm looking for.

"They have to want to succeed and be hungry to do it. That's another issue you have to deal with. If they tick those boxes than we will have a look at them."

Lambert knows he has to do more to provide support for Bent after the England forward barely had a touch in last weekend's opening day defeat at West Ham.

He does not want a repeat of that in his home debut in front of the Holte End against Everton on Saturday, adding: "I can understand the frustration because I was frustrated myself.

"From back to middle we did fine. You can't have that much of the ball and not create a chance and that is something I have to rectify."

Lambert is hopeful that Agbonlahor will return to training next week to begin the next phase of his recovery from a knee ligament problem.

But the England international is unlikely to be risked in the Capital One Cup against Tranmere Rovers on Tuesday.
