Giroud: I'm not direct RVP replacement

Arsenal new boy Olivier Giroud has warned he should not be expected to fill the void left by Robin van Persie and pleaded for time to prove himself in the Premier League.

• Pulis feels no extra pressure for Arsenal
• Wenger: Our squad is better now

Giroud's Emirates Stadium debut was marred by a howling late miss in Saturday's disappointing 0-0 stalemate against Sunderland, and he is eager to remind Arsenal fans that he will take time to step into the shoes of the striker who fired a stunning 30 Premier League goals last season.

"I am here to bring something different to the team and not to replace a player who has left," Giroud said. "I have respect for Van Persie, but now I will get a chance in the team as he has gone.

"I ask people to be a little patient with me and it is up to me to succeed here in the end. I have confidence in my ability and look forward to doing great things for this club."

Giroud was one of three high-profile arrivals at Arsenal this summer - along with Santi Cazorla and Lukas Podolski - when he signed from Montpellier.
