McDermott says Royals will bounce back

Brian McDermott has said Reading will not be downhearted after their 4-2 defeat at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

The Royals manager saw his side take a 2-1 lead against the European champions after going behind to a Frank Lampard penalty, but the home side scored three more - including an offside-looking Fernando Torres goal - to take the points.

McDermott voiced his frustration that the Torres goal had been allowed to stand, but said he would continue to set his side out in an attacking way when they face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

He said: "For what it is worth, it [the decision] still rankles - but there is not a lot you can do about it now. You have to hope the decisions are right, because if they had been right last night we would have got at least a point.

"I have taken a lot from the way we played. We showed great resilience to come back from a goal down and score a second goal. That gives us a lot of hope and positivity going into the Sunderland game.''

He said the Royals would "carry on doing the right things" against Martin O'Neill's team, who could have Wolves' Steven Fletcher in their ranks if a deal can be concluded in time.

And he said he would be keeping faith in goalkeeper Adam Federici, who allowed Gary Cahill's long-range shot to squeeze past him for the Chelsea equaliser, adding: "He will come through that and come through it stronger.

"We lost the play-off final [in 2011] and I thought it was the end of the world, but it wasn't. People make mistakes, and we move on and we learn from it and get stronger from it.''
