Lambert feels Saints can push on

Rickie Lambert insists his Southampton side are targeting far more than Premier League survival after their impressive first game back in the top flight against Manchester City on Sunday.

• Agent: Ramirez move off

Lambert, 30, came off the bench to ruffle the feathers of the defending Premier League champions and even though the Saints ended up losing 3-2 at Eastlands, the striker believes the performance has fuelled his side with belief ahead of their first home game of the season against Wigan on Saturday.

"We are proud of the way we played against City and hopefully it gives us all belief that we can compete at this level," states Lambert, who led the scoring charts in the Championship last season.

"That performance showed that we can do well in the Premier League and none of us in the dressing room believe we have only come here to survive. We have confidence in our ability to compete at this level."

Lambert admits he was "disappointed" to be left on the bench by Saints boss Nigel Adkins last Sunday, but he insists he "will not sulk" as he aims to make the most of his long wait to play in the Premier League.

"You could see how much it meant to me when I scored because that goal was something I have waited many years for," Lambert said. "I've scored plenty of times in the lower leagues, but to score against the champions in the Premier League was a great moment for me."
