Zenit in for Arsenal's Arshavin

Zenit St Petersburg are believed to be lining up a £10 million bid for Arsenal's Andrei Arshavin, despite claiming they will not sign the Russia captain on a permanent basis.

Arshavin, 31, enjoyed a successful loan stint at Zenit in the second half of last season and the expectation was that he would look to cement a permanent switch to the club after Arsenal made it clear they are eager to cash in on him.

Now it seems as if they wheels are in motion for the move to be finalised, with Arshavin fuelling speculation that a move is imminent after he paid what was described by his advisers as a "business" trip to St Petersburg last Sunday.

Despite the Russian's career at Emirates Stadium looking over, however, he came on as a substitute in Arsenal's opening game of the season against Sunderland.

Meanwhile AC Milan have emerged as shock contenders to sign unwanted Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner, who has been told he can leave the North London club after he returned from a season-long loan at Sunderland.
