Sunderland close in on Fletcher

Sunderland have agreed a fee with Wolves for striker Steven Fletcher, according to reports.

• West Ham in Jarvis bid

Sunderland have spent most of the summer chasing Fletcher, 25, and had seen a bid of £10 million rejected earlier in the window. It now appears a deal, reported to be worth £14 million, is close to completion.

The news follows comments from Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey last week in which he said he was hoping to bring an end to the ongoing speculation.

Moxey said last week: "We have always said we want to keep our best players. If our valuations of them are not met then they will remain at Wolves, but we cannot allow this speculation about their futures to drag on indefinitely up to the closure of the transfer window."

Fletcher was left out of Wolves squad for their opening-day defeat to Leeds United at the weekend, and it is believed he is keen to move to Wearside, having submitted a transfer request earlier this month.

Should the Scotland international join the club, he will be manager Martin O'Neill's third signing of the summer following the arrivals of free agents Carlos Cuellar and Louis Saha.
