Sheedy diagnosed with bowel cancer

Former Everton and Republic of Ireland midfielder Kevin Sheedy has been diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Sheedy, who works as a coach at Everton's academy, will have surgery later in the week. He joined the club from Liverpool in 1982 and scored 97 goals in 369 games over ten years before moving on to Newcastle and finishing his playing career at Blackpool.

He won two league titles at Goodison Park, as well as the FA Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup, and represented Republic of Ireland at Euro 88 and Italia 90.

Speaking about his cancer to Everton's official website, the 52-year-old said: "It's not ideal, but I have to remain positive. There is a history in the family."

He added: "It's so important that people don't ignore the early signs and symptoms and don't be afraid to consult a GP. After a period of rehabilitation, I will return to my coaching role at Everton."

Everton have asked fans to e-mail messages of support for Sheedy to sheeds@evertonfc.com.
