Bent would welcome Defoe and Jones

Darren Bent would welcome the arrival of another striker at Aston Villa as manager Paul Lambert continues to consider possible moves for either Jermain Defoe or Kenwyne Jones.

• Lambert praises strike duo

Bent has played alongside Jones at Sunderland and Defoe for England and Spurs, and he said: "Competition is always good. If the manager decides he wants to bring someone else in as well, it's only going to help Aston Villa Football Club."

He added: "Defoe is a top international striker. He's a great finisher, he can score goals and make goals for himself. He'd be a fantastic addition.

"I've played with Kenywyne Jones before and he's a fantastic striker on his day. He's up there with the best of them."

Bent also said he is looking to force his way back into the England set-up after missing out on Euro 2012 after narrowly failing to prove his fitness due to an ankle ligament injury towards the back end of last season.

It was yet more misery for Bent on the international front, having missed out on the squad for the 2010 World Cup finals under Fabio Capello.

Roy Hodgson spoke with Bent shortly before setting off for Poland and Ukraine and urged him to concentrate on a full recovery for the start of the new Premier League campaign.

Bent said: "I have not spoken with Roy Hodgson since before the Championships. All I can do now is concentrate on my club form and get that right. That's all I can do really.

"If I score goals for Villa and we play well and win games it's only going to help me get back into that England squad."
