Norwich sign defender Bassong

Norwich City have signed defender Sebastien Bassong from Tottenham, with the Cameroon international moving to the Canaries on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

Bassong, 26, joined Spurs from Newcastle in an £8 million deal in 2009 and had worked with Norwich manager Chris Hughton during his time with the Magpies, whom he joined from French club Metz in 2008.

He has fallen down the pecking order at White Hart Lane and spent a loan spell at Wolves last season. His 44 appearances for Tottenham saw him score the club's first-ever Champions League goal, in a qualifier against Young Boys in 2010.

Norwich suffered an opening-day nightmare against Fulham at Craven Cottage, losing 5-0 as they fell apart defensively.

Hughton said: "Sebastien is a player that I have known well since my time at Newcastle, and I'm delighted to have brought in someone with the Premier League experience he has got. He will give us power and pace at the back, and add to the competition in the squad."

Writing on Twitter, Bassong said: "I've been officially transferred to Norwich today. Three years deal. Another chapter in my football life. I wish all the best to my old team mate at Spurs. I've had a great time with them."

He said the chance of a reunion with Hughton had played a major part in his decision to move to East Anglia, telling Norwich's official website: "He was the first man to give me a training session in England when I came from France.

"He knows me really well, and so I am very happy to work for him again. This is a really good thing for me to join this club, and I am looking forward to playing for the team.

He said the Canaries had impressed him during his loan spell with Wolves last season, saying: "This is a strong team with good character and there is also quality here.

"I have had some great years at Newcastle and Tottenham, then also some times when I was not playing enough. It brought me experience - I have grown up now and know how to handle it. Now, though, I have to use that [experience] to help Norwich the best I can."
