Real Madrid's Pepe home from hospital

Real Madrid centre-half Pepe has been released from hospital after spending Sunday night under observation after a clash of heads with his goalkeeper Iker Casillas against Valencia at the Bernabeu.

He was allowed to return home after test results brought no further concerns, having been taken to hospital after being substituted at half-time after the clash of heads, which happened in the build-up to Valencia's equaliser in the match on Sunday evening.

Pepe received treatment at the time but continued playing until half-time. Spanish newspaper Marca reported on Monday that he then complained of feeling dizzy and was taken to Madrid's Hospital de La Paz, spending the night under observation in its intensive care unit.

The Portuguese international was released on Monday lunchtime according to a statement from the Madrid club doctor, Carlos Diez, which said: "Usually, when there is a traumatic brain injury, we keep the player under observation for 24 hours.

"And, above all, we send him to hospital, where we can do the necessary tests, which have been negative. He spent the night under observation and everything is fine.

"We have decided that the player can leave the hospital, under the control of Real Madrid's medical team, without any problem."

Given the caution with which any head injury must be dealt, it looks likely that Pepe will miss Thursday's Spanish Supercopa first leg against Barcelona at the Camp Nou.

With Ricardo Carvalho set to leave the club this summer, Spanish international Raul Albiol - who played the second half against Valencia - should again deputise.
