Sheff Wed snap up Barca's Rodri on loan

Sheffield Wednesday have completed the signing of striker Rodri from Barcelona on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent transfer.

• Live Transfer Blog: On the Move

Rodri, 22, began his career at Sevilla and scored 28 goals in 54 games for their B team in the Spanish third division. He was also part of the academy team which won the Copa del Rey Juvenil de FĂștbol.

The former Spain Under-21 international hit the headlines on the last day of the 2009-10 season when he came off the bench to score a dramatic, late acrobatic winner for Sevilla against Almeria in La Liga, which lifted his club into the Champions League places.

His performances for their B team led to interest from Barcelona, and he signed for the Spanish giants for a fee of €1.5 million last summer on a four-year contract with a buy-out clause of €10 million.

But the player, full name Rodrigo Rios Lozano, struggled to impress for Barca's B team last season, though he did score seven goals in 35 appearances in the Segunda Division.

Rodri arrived at Hillsborough with his father for talks at the end of last week, and passed a medical over the weekend.

"I am very happy to be here and I can't wait to get started," Rodri said. "I was at the game on Saturday and I thought the team did very well in the second half, the fans on a scale of 0-10 were definitely a 10. It was a massive crowd that came from Sheffield.

"That was an away game for the club so I can't wait to see them in a home game. I come here with a lot of excitement and I want to start as soon as possible. Everyone knows the standard of player at Barcelona but in the Barcelona B side, it is full of players with much potential - very talented guys.

"I am a striker and I am confident I will get a lot of chances and confident I can score goals to help the club."

Owls chairman Milan Mandaric added: "Our manager is very excited about the player and we have been working hard on this."
