Lambert praises Defoe and Jones

Paul Lambert has voiced his admiration for Jermain Defoe and Kenwyne Jones, but says it is a case of "wait and see" as to whether either striker becomes an Aston Villa player.

The Villa Park boss is keen to bolster the attacking options of a team that struggled badly for goals last season once Darren Bent had suffered an injury.

Villa have been linked with a move for Defoe - who is currently the only recognised senior striker on the books at Tottenham - while Stoke are believed to be keen to offload Jones as manager Tony Pulis looks to reshape his squad.

Lambert said: "You are talking about two really good players, different types of players, there. I think a club this size will always be linked with players of that ilk.

"I don't think you ever stop looking for players. You have always got to try and improve. Whether they come in or not we will have to wait and see, but any manager will tell you that you are always going to look for players."

Lambert said no moves away from Villa were imminent for either Stephen Warnock or Alan Hutton, both of whom have been told they can leave if Villa receive suitable offers. He added: "I spoke to Stephen and Alan - they know the situation, what is going on."

Summer signing Brett Holman has shaken off a knee problem and will be in the squad for Villa's trip to Wst Ham on Saturday. Fellow new arrivals Ron Vlaar, Matthew Lowton and Karim El Ahmadi are also in contention to play at Upton Park.
