Johnson relieved of captaincy

Roger Johnson has been officially relieved of his captaincy duties at Wolves and was also told his training still needs to improve.

The club's big-money 2011 signing, who fell out of favour after reporting for training last season the worse for wear following a boozy night out, will not lead the side under new manager Stale Solbakken.

"I told him early on he won't be captain," the Norwegian revealed ahead of their first game with Leeds. "He was very mature about it. I told him he has to be a better player on the pitch and take more responsibility for his own situation and the team's situation. He has done that.

"He has done a good pre-season and he is a match player. You won't see him being the best trainer but he has to be a better trainer. He has trained well but not very well. In the games, he has done very well.

"When his concentration falls away, his head can start thinking about things other than football. It's about having that fighting face when it's not going so well."

Johnson was quickly appointed as skipper when signed by Solbakken's predecessor Mick McCarthy from Birmingham last summer but angered his team-mates by turning up for training in February under the influence of alcohol.

Karl Henry was subsequently handed the armband again and is almost certain to be leading the side out this season. The Wolverhampton-born midfielder has this week signed a new four-year contract.
