QPR 'very close' to Bosingwa

QPR manager Mark Hughes believes a deal to sign Portuguese full-back Jose Bosingwa is "very close" to completion, following aan earlier admission from chairman Tony Fernandes that they were looking at the former Chelsea player.

Bosingwa, 29, was released by the Blues at the end of the season after four years at Stamford Bridge. The former Portugal international joined from Porto in a £16 million deal four years ago.

Reports overnight suggested that Rangers were keen on adding the attacking full-back to their ranks after what has already been a busy summer in the transfer market and were later confirmed by manager Hughes ahead of Saturday's fixture with Swansea.

"We are having discussions with the boy and his advisors and it is something we are keen to do if we can,'' Hughes told a press conference.

"We think we are very close but hopefully in the next few hours that will be shaped and we will have a better understanding about whether that is possible. We think we are very close to being able to bring him in but as usual I don't really like talking about players we haven't signed until we actually do.'

"He is the right quality and has a lot of football left in him as well, he is only 29 and we would be delighted if we could bring him to the club. I think he now understands what we are trying to do here and that is why players of his ilk are seriously considering coming to Queens Park Rangers now.''

QPR chairman Tony Fernandes earlier refused to confirm reports that a deal was imminent, but did acknowledge that talks had taken place.

"He is one of many we have talked about," the chairman said. "I'm not exactly sure where we are on that, so let's see. We are still looking. We are still hoping to strengthen one or two areas."

Bosingwa won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and Community Shield during his time at Stamford Bridge, and had also been part of Porto's 2004 Champions League-winning squad.
