Everton nearing Mirallas deal

Everton are closing in on the £5.3 million signing of Olympiakos striker Kevin Mirallas as manager David Moyes looks to strengthen his squad following Jack Rodwell's departure.

Mirallas, who has been a target for Arsenal this summer, is expected to travel to Merseyside for a medical on Thursday.

Moyes has moved quickly for the Belgium international following the sale of Rodwell to Manchester City on Sunday for an initial fee of £12 million.

The Everton manager has been keen to bring in a striker to ease the burden on Nikica Jelavic ahead of Monday night's opening Premier League game against Manchester United at Goodison Park.

Tim Cahill, Royston Drenthe and Denis Stracqualursi have all left the club during the summer, leaving Moyes short of forward options.

He had been considering a bid for Fulham striker Clint Dempsey – also a Liverpool target – and will decide in the next few days whether to make an offer for Caen's 17-year-old prospect M'Baye Niang.

Mirallas was the Greek Superleague's top scorer last season, hitting 20 goals as Olympiakos retained their title.

Asked at Belgium's training camp on Monday if he would be interested in a move to the Premier League, the striker said: "Moving to England would be good for me. It would be good for my family and a good opportunity."

Mirallas, who can also play on either wing, is with the Belgium squad for Wednesday night's friendly against Netherlands in Brussels, after which he will make the journey to Merseyside.

He would be Everton's third summer signing, following the arrival of Steven Naismith from Rangers on a free transfer and the permanent return of Steven Pienaar from Tottenham for £4.5 million.

The move would give Mirallas, who has scored five times in 27 appearances for Belgium, the chance to link up with international team-mate Marouane Fellaini.
