Barton faces league loan block - report

Joey Barton could be blocked from going on loan to a Football League club, reports have claimed.

QPR midfielder Barton must serve a 12-match ban after being sent off for against Manchester City on the final day of last season and becoming involved in confrontations with Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany after the card had been shown.

Barton spent a week with league newcomers Fleetwood Town earlier this summer, and a loan deal had been mooted. Because Football League clubs play more fixtures more quickly than those in the Premier League, he could have returned to action with the Cod Army in early October.

Reports at the time said the FA would not prevent the loan switch on the condition that Barton did not return to Loftus Road before QPR had played 12 league games - several weeks later than Fleetwood.

But it has since been claimed that the Football League would not register the midfielder as a loan player at a league club because such a move would not be in the spirit of the game and would bring it into disrepute.

However, other reports have suggested that the Fleetwood loan move had fallen through because QPR had turned down the idea of Barton spending time in League Two.

After the move failed, Barton was linked with a season-long loan switch to Fleetwood's near-neighbours Blackpool, but the Championship club's manager Ian Holloway denied that would be happening.

Holloway, whose team lost the play-off final to West Ham last season, told the Blackpool Gazette he did not know where the Barton speculation had come from.

He said: "I haven't got a clue where the Joey Barton rumours came from. I can't sign someone who I couldn't pick for 12 matches.

"If you look at the central midfield players I have, that's not the area I need players. I need strikers. Joey's a great lad, but I don't know where that talk came from."
