Oxlade-Chamberlain out of squad

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is out of the England squad for Wednesday's friendly against Italy in Switzerland after suffering an ankle injury during Arsenal's game against Cologne.

• Hart and Sturridge out
• Carrick named in squad

Oxlade-Chamberlain was sent back to his club after reporting for duty with Roy Hodgson's squad on Monday morning. He joins Joe Hart and Daniel Sturridge in withdrawing from contention for the match in Berne.

Manchester City goalkeeper Hart has a back injury that kept him out of Sunday's Community Shield victory over Chelsea while Blues striker Daniel Sturridge, a substitute in that game, has a toe problem.

Hodgson has opted not to call up a replacement 'keeper, meaning that Norwich's John Ruddy or Jack Butland of Birmingham - the Team GB keeper at the London Olympics - will make their England debut, with a possibility that they could play half the game each.

Butland has said it will be a "dream come true" if he makes his senior England debut.

The 19-year-old, who played 24 first team games on loan a Cheltenham last season, added: "Unfortunately it's come - or hopefully will come - due to an injury, which is unfortunate for Joe but if I get the chance it will be a dream come true.

"It's something I can't stop thinking about and I'd love the chance to be able to perform on that stage on Wednesday night.

"There's not a lot of goalkeepers who get the chance at such a young age, so I'm very privileged to be in this position. I'm going to take everything in my stride. If it doesn't happen on Wednesday, I'm going to work harder to make it happen on a different occasion."

Butland was part of England's Euro 2012 squad and believes the experience he gained while playing for Stuart Pearce's Team GB will stand him in good stead.

"It was fantastic for everyone involved," he said. "I feel very proud and privileged that I was given a chance to be able to perform and be a part of something bigger than just football."

Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley is another player hoping to make his England debut, and another to have played for Team GB.

Cleverley was frustrated by injuries last season, but said he was looking to put those setbacks behind him and "hoping to play as much football as possible, whether that be for England or Manchester United".

He added that he had "enjoyed every minute" of playing at the Olympics, adding: "I've got fitness from it - I played five 90-minute games. It's a shame we didn't get a medal, but I enjoyed the all-round experience."

Meanwhile, Hodgson has added the Manchester City defender Jolean Lescott to his squad as cover.

Speaking after announcing the squad on Friday, Hodgson said: "You don't get many chances, when you've got a fairly settled squad, to look at other potential candidates, and this friendly match gives me that opportunity As a national coach, you need every game that you can get to look at players.

"I've left out a lot of the players who did extremely well at the Euros - the senior players whose position is in no doubt - to give others a chance."

The squad will travel to Switzerland on Tuesday, with the match being played on the following evening.
