Reus named German Player of the Year

Borussia Dortmund attacker Marco Reus has been voted German Player Of The Year by the country's sports journalists, with his boss Jurgen Klopp crowned Coach Of The Year.

Reus, who joined Dortmund in a €17 million deal this summer, claimed the award after his glittering displays helped Borussia Monchengladbach qualify for the Champions League last season and he becomes the first Gladbach player in 25 years to win the title.

The Germany international was overwhelmed to receive the prize and was keen to thank his former coach at Die Fohlen for his role.

"I am very proud as this honour is meant to last forever," Reus said. "I will take this award as an incentive to rev up and go the extra mile next season.

"Lucien Favre was the best coach I so far had in my career although Michael Frontzeck always backed me up when I first got to Moenchengladbach.

"It only starts now. At 23, I have not reached the end of my development. Experience is an important factor, which I will add over the next years."

Reus, 23, snubbed the interest of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Inter and Manchester City, to sign for his hometown club Dortmund, with his new team-mates Mats Hummels and Robert Lewandowski finishing second and third in the vote. New Manchester United midfielder Shinji Kagawa was fourth.

Reus signed for Borussia Moenchengladbach on a free transfer from Rot-Weiss Ahlen in 2009 and scored 18 goals in 32 matches for last season's surprise package in the Bundesliga.

Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp, 45, won the title for the second year in a row in front of Gladbach's Lucien Favre and Freiburg's Christian Streich. The double-winning coach said the award was "a huge honour" and "another confirmation" of an incredible season, which saw Dortmund reach a record-breaking tally of 81 points. Klopp added: "This vote shows we as a [coaching] team are doing a not too bad job."
