Manchester City sign Jack Rodwell

Manchester City have signed Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell for a reported fee of around £12 million and he has signed a five-year deal at Eastlands.

• Live Transfer Blog: On the Move

Rodwell, 21, made his debut for Everton in 2007 after progressing through the club's academy but will now look to take a step up in his career with the reigning Premier League champions.

A statement on the Everton website read: "Jack Rodwell has completed his transfer to Manchester City. The midfielder has joined the Premier League champions for an undisclosed fee after Everton accepted a bid on Sunday. He underwent a medical and agreed personal terms with City, penning a five-year contract."

Rodwell said: "I have a special relationship with the Chairman, Mr Kenwright, who did not want me to leave but this was an opportunity I could not refuse. I would like to place on record my thanks to everyone at Everton Football Club. The manager has been brilliant for me and helped make me the player that I am today.

"I would like to place on record my thanks to him and all the coaching staff and players who have worked with me since I joined the academy as a seven-year-old. Finally I would like to thank all the fans who have been amazing during my years at Everton. I have enjoyed every minute of my time there and I wish everyone at the club the best of luck for the new season and beyond.

The midfielder, who has struggled with injury in recent years, faces a fight to get into the City side, but said he was looking forward to the chance to test himself.

Rodwell continued: "Turning to Manchester City, it is an honour to be signing for the champions. I relish the opportunity of playing with some of the best players in the world and continuing my development.

"I look forward to working with Mr Mancini and his coaching staff and ultimately playing in front of the City fans at the Etihad Stadium. It will be an amazing experience to make my debut in front of them. The hard work starts today as I start to help contribute to the club winning more silverware."

After the Community Shield win on Sunday, City boss Roberto Mancini said that he sees Rodwell as a player for the future.

He said: "Jack is a good player. He is young. It is the first time he is in a club that plays to win and it will be different for him. But in a couple of years I am sure he will be a top and stronger midfielder. He has good quality.

"Rodwell is a player that needs to improve to play in this eleven but he is young and a good player for our future. We are interested in all good players. I liked him last season. For this reason, we bought him.''
