Ex-Bari defender gets 26-month ban

A former Bari defender has been handed a 26-month ban from football as the investigation into Italy's match-fixing scandal continues.

Andrea Masiello, who now plays for Atalanta, was handed his punishment as Alessandro Parisi, Marco Rossi and Marco Esposito, all of whom were Bari team-mates of Masiello, were also suspended.

Parisi, who is without a club, was banned for two years, Rossi for 22 months and Esposito three months and ten days. All were fined, but their fines were not disclosed.

The Italian Football Federation tribunal investigating the scandal imposed the suspensions after accepting plea bargain offers from the defendants.

Sampdoria were fined €30,000 and docked a point for the forthcoming Serie A season. Serie B Bari were hit with a fine of €80,000 and deducted five points.

Serie A games involving Bari and played in the 2010-11 season have been investigated because officials believe an international gambling ring paid players to fix results.

It is feared that dozens of players in the Italian game, both former and current and a a variety of clubs and levels, could be embroiled in the scandal.

The case of Juventus coach Antonio Conte will go to a full sporting trial after his plea bargain offer of a three-month ban was rejected earlier this week.

Conte is accused of failing to report fixing in two games when he was coach of Siena, who then played in Serie B, in the 2010-11 season. Siena were deducted six points on Thursday.
