Botafogo defeated by Palmeiras

Botafogo midfielder Vitor Junior was not giving up on qualification from the Copa Sudamericana, despite tonight's 2-0 defeat to Palmeiras.

Hernan Barcos scored both goals as the hosts beat their Brazilian compatriots 2-0, in both teams' debut in the competition.

But Junior believes qualification is still possible as he said: "They have clinched this result here and we can get the same in Rio de Janeiro. We know it is not easy, but we have what it takes."

Argentinian striker Barcos, who took his goal tally in the competition to 12 in recent years, gave Palmeiras a promising advantage ahead of the August 22 returm against a Botafogo team who were without Clarence Seedorf, who missed this match due to coaching reasons.

Botafogo started brightly but failed to finish the opportunities they had, with Andrezinho hitting the post. However, two minutes after the break, Barcos chested down an Artur cross and thumped past goalkeeper Jefferson to give Palmeiras the lead.

The hosts looked to consolidate their advantage and they duly added a second thanks to Barcos' left-footed strike.

Sao Paulo celebrated a 2-0 away win at tournament debutants Bahia.

Goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a free-kick, while young star Ademilson tapped in after Cortes had struck the post in the 68th minute.

The keeper told Folha: "It is an important result. We took a good lead in order to play at home in the return game. We are growing up as a team, we mark better.

"We were calm enough to play with the ball close to our feet. We must keep doing our best every day.''

In Goiania, Uruguayan striker Washington Sebastian Abreu rescued a 1-1 draw for Figueirense at Atletico Goianiense.

Abreu equalised in the 69th minute after Marcio had put the hosts in front with a 37th-minute penalty.

In Ecuador, hosts Deportivo Quito edged out Peru's Leon de Huanuco 1-0, with Roller Cambindo netting an own goal in the 64th minute.
