Laudrup plans to cut Swans squad

Swansea manager Michael Laudrup says he wants to cut back his Liberty Stadium squad before the start of the new season.

The Dane believes 25 senior players - the current total - is too many, and says a 22 or 23-man group would give everyone in it the belief that they could feature in the matchday squad of 18.

"If you have 25 players, you have to leave out seven every time - and that's too many," he told the South Wales Evening Post. "If you are always one of the seven, after three months you will say: 'What am I doing here?'"

"The idea is to work with 22 or maximum 23 players. You will then have a squad where everybody feels they are close to the 18-man squad for each game.

"That's one part of it. Another part is to do with the youngsters. If they see 25 players in the squad, they think it is very difficult to break into it.

"But if it is smaller, and you have three or four injuries, one or two of the young players can come into the first-team squad and will be happy that it's not impossible to get there."

Laudrup said a smaller squad would also benefit training routines, allowing everyone to play a full part. A bigger pool of players means "you will have to have some players doing other things, and you cannot have that for too long because they will lose their motivation".

Although the manager has revealed his plans to cut the squad, there is no indication of which players could be on their way out. "Everyone starts out the same in pre-season," he said. "The market is open until August 31, and a lot of things can happen in that time."

One player who looks increasingly likely to depart is influential midfielder Joe Allen. Allen has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield, where he would be reunited with his former Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers.

Reports suggest that he may have agreed personal terms with Liverpool, but no fee has been decided between the two clubs.
