Rovers rocked by Best injury

Blackburn Rovers striker Leon Best is facing a lengthy period on the sidelines after damaging his anterior cruciate ligament in a pre-season friendly on Sunday.

Best, 25, arrived at Ewood Park earlier this month in a £3 million switch from Newcastle United and had been expected to spearhead Steve Kean's attack in the Championship for the coming season.

However, the Ireland international is now unlikely to feature for the club again this year after being carried off on a stretcher before half-time in Rovers' 2-1 pre-season friendly win over AEK Athens at Fleetwood.

A statement from Blackburn said: "Rovers are preparing for the start of the Championship season without Leon Best after the striker suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in Sunday's pre-season friendly against AEK Athens.

"The Irish international, who only joined the club from Newcastle United earlier this month, was stretchered off shortly before half-time in the 2-1 win.

"Best, who had scored a superb goal in the game, was sent for a scan this morning and Rovers' worst fears were confirmed, with the 25-year-old now set to face an extended spell on the sidelines.''

With Best out of action, Blackburn will be expected to dip into the transfer market to bolster their attacking options as Nuno Gomes and David Goodwillie are the club's only senior strikers at present.
