Puyol set to make comeback

Barcelona captain Carles Puyol has been given the go-ahead to resume playing competitively after undergoing knee surgery in May.

Puyol, 34, missed out on competing at Euro 2012 due to the injury which disrupted the latter stages of his 2011-12 season.

A statement on Barcelona's official website read: "The captain, who trained with the team last week, successfully recovered from his knee injury and was given the medical all-clear this morning.

"This morning, Carles Puyol was given the green light to play by the club's medical services. The captain underwent surgery on May 12 to correct an osteochondral injury in his right knee. The surgical arthroscopic process was performed on the captain in order to clean out the his knee joint.

"Puyol joined training last week and he completed a couple of sessions with the group. The captain was one of the eight players that underwent medical tests this morning.''

Elsewhere, though, there was disappointing news for 20-year-old defender Marc Muniesa, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the club's pre-season friendly with Hamburg.

The club announced that Muniesa is expected to miss six months of action as he recovers from surgery.
