Dos Santos urged to exit Spurs

Mexico coach Luis Fernando Tena has urged Giovani dos Santos to quit Tottenham Hotspur and seek regular first-team football elsewhere.

• Dos Santos nets double

Dos Santos scored both goals in Mexico's 2-0 win over Gabon in an Olympic Games Group B encounter at the City of Coventry Stadium on Sunday and Tena believes the playmaker can make a bigger impact if he plays on a regular basis at club level.

The 23-year-old, who was signed by Spurs from Barcelona four years ago, rarely gets a run out at White Hart Lane and has been sent out on various loan spells to Ipswich Town, Galatasaray and most recently Racing Santander.

Tena said: "He definitely needs to find his rhythm. He has the potential to achieve things and it would be better if he had that rhythm at club level.

"Unfortunately he doesn't get that many minutes on the pitch at Tottenham. It will be better if he played more at club level and then he can give more to Mexico."

Dos Santos has just a year left on his current Tottenham deal and he has already expressed a desire to return to Spain next summer, but his comments have not gone down well with new Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas.

"I am not sure what Gio's thought process was, coming out with a statement like that," Villas-Boas said recently.

"The player is contracted to the club. We respect him and are counting on him to return to club duty. Then we will make a decision that is best for the club."
