A-League's Wanderers win pre-season game

The A-League's newest club Western Sydney Wanderers enjoyed a 5-0 victory over Nepean FC in their first match.

Wanderers coach Tony Popovic used seven of his nine contracted players in the clash with trialist striker Joe Gibbs starring with four goals in front of an encouraging crowd of just over 3500 at Cook Park in St Marys on Wednesday night.

Popovic was delighted with the effort from his side in the pre-season hitout and was thrilled so many fans came along to see the fledgling team play.

"I'm buzzing. I'm very happy with tonight's performance, it was a great atmosphere and a fantastic turnout - I think it showed a lot of the players what they have become a part of," Popovic said.

"I'm pleased with how we played in our first outing and all the players on trial acquitted themselves well.

"We'll look over the match and training over the coming days to identify our next signings but as I said I am very happy with the result."

The Wanderers' next match is against Blacktown Spartans at Blacktown International Sportspark on August 1.
