Henry & Donovan: Cahill will star in MLS

Thierry Henry and Landon Donovan believe Tim Cahill will shine in the MLS, should the Australia international complete his switch to the New York Red Bulls.

• Everton accept offer for Cahill

Cahill is on the verge of a £1 million move to the United States after Everton agreed to New York's transfer bid on Monday evening. The forward will join Henry at the club if he passes a routine medical, and the former Arsenal star has predicted Cahill to succeed across the Atlantic.

"Talking about Tim Cahill, he's going to be great," Henry said. "We're going to have to wait for him to undergo his medical. He's going to be a great asset for us and also for the league.

"If you saw the guy play the way he plays, I love the commitment and I always loved his commitment. He's great in the box, his headers are unbelievable. He fights back to the net and his football brain is great also. Hopefully that can be a plus for us."

Henry's fellow MLS All-Star Donovan says he would have preferred Cahill join him at the Los Angeles Galaxy, having seen his impact first-hand while at Premier League club Everton.

"I didn't speak to Tim about this particularly. I would have preferred to have him in LA but it's a great opportunity for him and fingers crossed everything works out for him," Donovan said. "He always spoke very fondly of our league."

Donovan also claims more Europe-based players are looking to the MLS as an option throughout their careers.

"Most players and their families enjoy the prospect of living in America," he said. "There are a lot of pluses to playing here, and now when the league has made the sort of financial commitments they have made to players it sweetens the pot even more."
