Hoffenheim want €6.5m for Babel

Hoffenheim are asking €6.5 million for Ryan Babel despite the player having only one year remaining on his contract, according to his agent.

Babel, 25, signed for Hoffenheim from Liverpool in January 2011, but he has struggled to find his best form in the Bundesliga and Markus Babbel, who took charge of the club in February, has announced that he is free to leave.

Babel's agent, Winnie Haatrecht, has now claimed that decision was motivated by a clause in his contract.

"In last season's winter transfer window, we made some contract agreements with Hoffenheim," Haatrecht told De Telegraaf. "Ryan's wages would be doubled if he plays at least four games next season.

"Apparently, Hoffenheim go very far to offload a player who still has one year on his current contract. Today, Ryan will train with the reserve team. He has to wait."

Haatrecht believes Hoffenheim will struggle to sell the player given their asking price.

"It won't be easy to get a transfer, because Hoffenheim don't want a loan period for him," he said. "They want €6.5 million for him. Hoffenheim paid Liverpool €6.9 million plus a few bonuses, so how realistic is it to ask €6.5 million for a player with a one-year contract?"

He added: "Ryan also had a good period at Hoffenheim. He scored a few goals and came back into the picture for a place in the Dutch national team. Of course, his transfer from Liverpool to Germany didn't work out how he expected it, but it's not easy when you have to work with three different coaches in less than one year."
