Assuncao swaps Atletico for Sao Paulo

Sao Paulo have snapped up Brazilian midfielder Paulo Assuncao after his contract with Atletico Madrid was terminated by mutual consent.

• Atletico expect Adrian to stay

Assuncao, 32, returns to play in his homeland for the first time in eight years, having enjoyed spells with Porto, AEK Athens and Atletico since leaving Nacional in 2004.

During four seasons with the Rojiblancos he helped the club win the 2010 and 2012 Europa Leagues and the UEFA Super Cup, but after starting just ten games in all competitons in 2011-12 he felt the time was right to leave the Vicente Calderon.

"I've experienced the best moments of my career at Atletico, winning three European titles," Assuncao told Atletico's official website. "I'll always remember my time at Atletico.

"I hope they do very well this season and achieve their objectives. I'm really excited about returning to Brazil and hope I can continue showing what I can do.''

Assuncao agreed to cancel the one year he had remaining on his Atletico contract and departed the club's pre-season training camp in order to pen a one-year deal with Sao Paulo.
