Southampton sign Davis

Southampton have announced the signing of midfielder Steven Davis after reaching an agreement with the Rangers newco.

• Rangers embargo delayed
• Guly signs new Saints deal

Northern Ireland international Davis, 27, has committed to a contract until 2016 with the Saints after talks reached a positive conclusion.

An announcement on Southampton's official website read: "Saints are pleased to announce that they have reached an agreement with Glasgow Rangers over the transfer of Steven Davis.

"The midfielder originally agreed to join Saints earlier this month following the well-publicised issues surrounding the Scottish giants. Since then both clubs have been in discussions to reach an amicable solution that would avoid the need the player's international transfer clearance to be agreed at a FIFA tribunal."

Davis, who has previous Premier League experience after spells with Aston Villa and Fulham, has been training with Southampton since July 6 and is relieved the move has now been formalised.

"I'm delighted to get everything sorted," he said. "There was an element of uncertainty at how long it would take to get the transfer papers through, so I have to give credit to the executive chairman Nicola Cortese for wanting to get it done and removing the need for things to drag on any longer.

"This is good news for all parties, and now we can all move forward."

Rangers chief executive Charles Green told his club's official website that he was pleased the deal had been agreed.

"I am delighted that we have agreed terms over the transfer of Steven Davis," he said. "Southampton have acted in good faith during the process.

"We wish them every success and they have signed a player who will undoubtedly make a great contribution to their club - just as he did at Ibrox."
