Ba nets winner for Toon

Demba Ba scored the only goal of the game as Newcastle survived a tough pre-season test to beat Ligue 2 side Monaco 1-0 in Bavaria.

The Senegal international, who was the Magpies' top scorer last season, rose high to beat Monaco keeper Daniel Subasic in the 33rd minute.

Alan Pardew, whose side lost their pre-season opener against Chemnitzer last week, saw Shola Ameobi, Mehdi Abeid and Gabriel Obertan squander chances to add to the scoreline.

Ameobi had the chance to open the scoring inside the first minute, but his backheel hit the post. It could have proved costly as Ibrahima Toure saw his volley fly over the bar before Yannick Ferreira Carrasco's attempted lob inched past the post after Davide Santon's header back to keeper Steve Harper fell short.

Harper then denied Toure from point blank range, the keeper keeping Monaco at bay after the shot hit him in the face.

Having grabbed a goal shortly after the half-hour mark, Newcastle saw their lead challenged shortly after the break as Valere Germain hit the woodwork with a powerful header. Ba later had the chance to score his second of the night, but his header from Ryan Taylor's cross flew wide.
