Pardew: Cisse will forget Olympic woe

Alan Pardew is confident Papiss Cisse will shrug off his Olympic disappointment to shine for Newcastle in the coming season.

Cisse had set his sights on being one of the three over-aged players in Senegal's squad for London 2012, but Newcastle blocked that bid.

Magpies boss Pardew claims it was in the club and player's best interests to make the call and he is confident the forward will knuckle down in pre-season.

"As much as I feel for Papiss, because I am sure he would have wanted to play - he's not back yet, he's due back later this week - we have to make a call for his own health," Pardew said. "I am sure he has got pressure from within the country for him to play and we have to release that pressure for him because physically, he couldn't do that. It's impossible.

"He had a full first half in Germany, he had the African Nations Cup, he had the second half of the season in his first year in the Premier League.

"He then had qualifying games, they want him again for the African Nations and they wanted him for the Olympics, and that was stretching it a little bit."

Pardew is likely to be an active player in the transfer market this summer and he is reported to be closing in on a deal for Mathieu Debuchy - the Lille defender who shone for France at Euro 2012.
