Friedel: Spurs are not a selling club

Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel has said he does not believe the club would let Luka Modric go unless a replacement was lined up, insisting: "We are not a selling club."

Modric has said he wants to leave White Hart Lane and Spurs are reported to be ready to sell for around £40 million. Le Parisien has claimed Paris St Germain are interested in signing the Croatia international and would be willing to meet Tottenham's valuation.

But Friedel told TalkSport: "Knowing the way the chairman works, if someone like Luka Modric left the club, then they would have a ready-made replacement.

"I can't see, with the ambition that the club has, that they can let players leave without having a replacement. We're not a selling club, that's for sure."

Friedel, 41, backed new Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas to succeed at White Hart Lane, saying he believed he could put his difficult spell at Chelsea behind him to become a winner in North London.

The 34-year-old Portuguese was sacked as Stamford Bridge coach after less than a season in charge, but the Spurs goalkeeper said: "You can only take people on what you see - and from what I have seen he is a very ambitious manager, he is very organised and training has been very sharp.

"He has let us know he wants to come here to win things, so everything looks very good. The club did a very good job of going out to get someone very ambitious, and our fans should be excited for the upcoming season."

Former United States international Friedel said he was unconcerned by speculation that France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris could be moving to Tottenham, stressing that he "would welcome any good addition to the squad."

Spurs have already signed the Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen and Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, who impressed on loan at Swansea last season, and could soon strike a permanent deal with Manchester City for striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

"If we can do a deal for him and he can score another 20 goals, it would be a huge bonus for us," Friedel said.
